Boys Baseball
Rainier v. St. Helens May 4, 1999
Double Header at St. Helens
First game: St. Helens 8-4. Justin Olsen is winning pitcher in
first game.
Second game: St. Helens 7-3
St. Helens is still ahead in the league, with a one game lead over Scappoose.
Bill Lannon hit a home run in the first game, a 2 run homer in the 2nd
Inning.
St. Helens jumped out 3 runs in the first innning, added 3 more in the
second, and one in the third, With St. Helens leading 7 - 0 , Rainier came
back slowly and finally got back in the game but could not overcome the
big deficit. St. Helens dominated by putting on a strong hitting performance.
The weather was good for most of the game, but it was fairly cold and
windy. The wind lightened up as the game went on. The weather was a big
factor in the early going, fly balls were very hard to field because of
the drift the wind would cause.
Rainier has three or four young players coming up on the team. Rainiers
program is building strength and we should be seeing them becoming more
competitive in coming seasons. The new indoor sports facilities in Rainier
should help build interest in Rainier's sports programs. With easy access
to indoor batting cages, Rainier hitters will be getting some added batting
strength. St. Helens dominated this game with more depth and more team
speed.

Play-Off Hopes
In the race for league playoff berths, Rainier is doing well this year,
but the two losses hurt their chances for making state. Seaside is a couple
of games back, and the rest of the teams besides St. Helens and Scappoose
are pretty much out of contention for the playoffs.
St. Helens has two big games coming up, one being the double header
against Scappoose,
followed by a double header against Seaside that will determine their
playoff seeding.
The first three teams in league standing will advance to state this
year. St. Helens is first with only one loss, and that loss was to Scappoose.
Scappoose has two losses -- Seaside and Clatskanie on the road. Seaside
is a good team; the loss to Clatskanie was considered an upset. Seaside
is only back a game or two.
The other 4 teams in the league are out of contention. It is a three
team race, St. Helens needs to split those double headers in order to win
the league. It is important to win the league because the first place team
gets a bye and a home game in the second round.
Girls Softball
In girls softball, Banks vs. St. Helens was rained out tonight, (May 6).
St. Helens was leading 2 to 1 at top of 4. It had been raining during the
entire game and finally made the field unplayable. They had to call the
game and it will be replayed tomorrow (Friday May 7) or the first available
date.
Scappoose and Banks are tied with one loss each, and St. Helens is one
game back. The lineup for the State tournament appears to be Scappoose,
St. Helens, and Banks, in that order.
River City Raceway
The Season opener for River City Raceway was canceled last weekend and
is rescheduled for next weekend weather permitting.
Track: Meet of Champions
Scappoose's Mike Hinshaw won the meet of Champions 200 and 400 meters,
against the top performers in the 3A schools in the State. St. Helens's
Katie Luttrell placed first in the long jump.
