ANIMAL STORIES

Pagoo’s brittle armor burst open across his back. He bent double, lashed his tail,

wriggled and bucked to pull all those pesky points and joints out of their plastic prisons.

This molting was almost as much trouble as being hatched all over again, but at last he had

shed his old skin. It drifted off in the sea like a moth’s tiny wings on a breeze, and

Pagoo was left soft and new all over. It felt good to be free, to stretch out and expand – and

suddenly he was hungrier than ever. It was easier to bring food near his mouth parts now, for he had an extra pair of fuzzy new oars with which to stir the sea-soup.

REALISTIC FICTION

Marilla came briskly forward as Matthew opened the door. But when her eyes fell on the odd little figure in the stiff, ugly dress, with the long braids of red hair and the eager, luminous eyes, she stopped in amazement.

"Matthew Cuthbert, who’s that? Where is the boy?"

"There wasn’t any boy, " said Matthew wretchedly. "There was only her." He nodded at the child, remembering that he had never even asked her name.

"No boy! But there must have been a boy," insisted Marilla. "We sent word to Mrs. Spencer to bring a boy."

MYSTERY AND ADVENTURE

"The witching hour!" Joe chuckled.

They reached the end of one of the side streets and decided to continue into more open country. Minutes later both boys stiffened as a distant howl echoed through the night, then another!

"Come on!" cried Frank. "That must be the real thing!"

They ran in the direction of the sounds and presently saw a figure dashing toward them out of the darkness. It proved to be a boy their own age, obviously scared out of his wits!

"What’s the matter?" Frank called out as the youth came closer.

"I just saw a wolf back there!" the boy panted. "It came right at me, and the thing glowed in the dark!"

FAIRY TALES, FOLKTALES AND MYTHS

The maiden rode many weary miles on the unicorn until at last she came to a great forest.

She slid off the unicorn’s back and tapped him three times on the left ear.

So tired was she that she lay down to rest making the roots of a giant tree her bed.

She slept, and as she slept she dreamed that the forest had uprooted itself and was gathering around her.

The sound of rustling wakened her, and there all about her stood the forest.

"Father Forest," she said, "do you know of a Kingdom east of the sun and west of the moon and do you know of a youth who is to marry the troll princess there?"
