"Everything in this book is true, except for the stuff I made up."

Student Responses to the oral reading of the novel Honus and Me, by Dan Gutman: (See Student Papers)

The Setting, by Kate:

The settings in the story are the baseball field, Joe's house, and Amanda's house. It seems like this story is in the mid-1980's. I think that because cards were popular then. I think what Joe found in the attic was a baseball card of Honus. I think that because Joe got that feeling and Honus is in the title of the story.

The Setting, by Kayla:

The story has more than one setting. The settings are the baseball field, his house, and the old lady's house. The old lady's house is very dusty and old and creepy. On the baseball field Joe always strikes out, but he collects a lot of baseball cards. I think the old lady's house is the best out of the three. I think that because the author tells a lot about it and it sounds creepy and weird looking. I think the other person in the torn picture is the old lady and she is sad because she misses the baseball player in the picture.

The Setting, by Jason:

I think it took place 20 years ago because they have old Baseball Cards and because you can get paid a lot more than five dollars for cleaning a attic. I think it took place at his house then he had a Baseball game. Then he lost and went home. Then went to school and then he went and cleaned Amanda's attic and found a box of baseball cards and found a real old card and that's it.

The Setting, by Kara:

Well, this is a really weird story. The setting was in the baseball park and in the kitchen. Well, the kitchen is in the boy's house. And the setting is in Mrs. Young's house and in the attic of Mrs. Young's house. And that is just about all of the setting. But now to the boy. He liked baseball and the boy only had a mom to live with. She came home late. They were poor. The boy worked and so did the mom. And that is all I know.

The Setting, by Dean:

The setting is in a lot of places. I think the baseball field is at a school and other settings are the boy's house, the old lady's house, and her attic, and that's about all the settings so far in this story. I also think it takes place in the '80's in Louisville.

The Setting, by Shannon:

There are three settings. There's the baseball field because it says that he goes to a baseball game and his house because it says the mom came home, then the old lady's front hall and the attic because he has to go and clean her attic for $5.

The Setting, by Paul:
I think this is from the 1980's to 1990 or something. The first setting is the baseball field. The second is his house and the third is the attic. I will explain the baseball field. It was by the school I think, and he was up the third time. He struck out two times already, and he struck out again. That's about it. Now the house. He got home and his mom got home after him, and she was beat and there was nothing to eat. Now the attic. It was dark and dusty. He had to clean it for 5 dollars so he did it and he was on the last couple of boxes and he picked it up but the bottom fell out of the box and he found a baseball card

Evaluation, by Krista:

I think Joe should go back to Ms. Young's house, show her the card, and tell her that there are only 40 of those cards left in the whole world. I think he should do that because it would be sly, sneaky, and kind of stupid because he would be stealing from an elderly lady.

Evaluation, by Kathy

I think Joe should give the card back. One reason is it's not nice to steal something from someone because it can be something they have had in their family for a long time. Another reason is you shoulnd't take it because they might not know that it was there and might want to know what it is.

Prediction, by Kathy

I think he is going to keep the card and try to get a lot of money for it. One reason is it says he is going to go to another place to see what they say about the card.

Prediction, by Kate

I think that Joe might cash in the card and split the money with Amanda. I think that because it is Amanda's card, not Joe's. Joe found the card so if he didn't find it they wouldn't get the money. It would be nice if they shared it and not one person keeping it.

Prediction, by Daniel

He might turn it back to the lady and the lady would think of his generosity so well that she would probably let him keep it for himself!

Prediction, by Melody

I think that he might give it back to her but you never know. Some books are tricky and what you think is going to happen doesn't. On the other hand, he will probably keep it since he was having money problems and all.

Prediction, by Grant

I think Joe will keep the card. That way he will get the money. But I think he will still want to give the card back to Miss Young. I think Miss Young will find out. Then the fun will start in the story!

1909 - 1998

Review, by Tryn

Differences between 1909 and the present: 1) everything is wood, 2) people were held in (at the baseball park) by a rope, 3) the price of tickets, 4) no dug-outs, 5) there were guards that were not policemen, 6) you could go straight to where the players were, 7) fountain pens, 8) the baseball with the wooden cork in the middle was just introduced, 9) people would give autographs for free, 10) the players changed clothes in their motel (no locker rooms).

Review, by Rachel

Differences between 1909 and the present: 1) the bleachers were made out of wood, 2) the amount of money you had to pay was cheaper, 3) the baseball didn't have dugouts, 4) the baseball players got paid less.
