Problem: The Tile Problem: It took 2880 tiles, 3 inches by 3 inches, to cover a 12 foot by 15 foot floor. How many 9 inch by 9 inch tiles would it take to cover the same floor?
Grant's Response:
What I need to do to solve this problem: [Grant drew a 9 by 9in. model and showed it divided into nine 3 x 3in. squares.]
What I need to do to solve this problem. First I need to make a model or picture, then I need to see how many times 9 goes
into 2880. When I get the answer I need to times it by 9 and see if it equals 2880. And that will be my answer.
My work: [drawing of tiles] Nine 3 inch tiles are equal to one 9 x 9 inch tile. [work shown] 2880 / 9 = 320.
320 x 9 = 2880.
Answer: 320 nine by nine inch tiles.
Check: [Another drawing.] Calculations rechecked.
