Study of Plants and the Ecosystem

Plant Growth Experiment by Grant:

Hypothesis: Will a bean seed grow better if planted right side up than if planted upside down?

Materials: Three white bean seeds, water, paper towel, potting soil, milk carton.

Procedure: Wrap the bean seeds in wet paper towel and wait a few days for the beans to germinate. Plant the two healthiest in the milk carton with potting soil. Plant one right side up and one upside down. Mark the sides of the carton where the beans are planted.

Data:
Sept. 1 - Wrapped seeds in wet paper towel and put in sun. They are small and hard, white, shiny.
Sept. 3 - No growth. Bean seeds are soft and slightly larger.
Sept. 8 - Seeds have sprouted roots and a small stem. Planted the seeds.
Sept. 10 - Bean 1 (right side up) is 6 cm. tall. Bean 2 (upside down) 0 cm tall.
Sept. 14 - Bean 1 is 21 cm tall. Bean 2 is 20 cm tall.
Oct. 6 - Bean 1 is 26 cm tall. Bean 2 is 17 cm tall.

Conclusion: The bean planted upside down is growing, but the bean that was planted right side up is taller. My conclusion is that the bean planted right side up got a better head start and is growing better.
