Problem: Which of the pairs of integers that add to 60 has the greatest product?
Daniel's response:
What I need to do to solve this problem: I need to figure out the highest positive integers for
60. I am going to make a list.
How I solved this problem:
| 30 x30 00 900 900 |
31 x29 279 620 899 |
32 x28 256 640 896 |
33 x27 231 660 891 |
Clearly 30 and 30 are the correct positive integers.
Answer: 30 and 30.
Checking my work: 900 ÷ 30 = 30 r0 (Worked out in long division.)
30 + 30 = 60
30 x 30 = 900
I saw that the more numbers I multiplied, I had to higher the number and lower the bottom number. I tried 4 different integers and I found a pattern. Every time I worked another way to add to 60, the multiplication answer got lower.
