What's Bad:
rocks |
What we need:
| sidewalk on both sides speed signs stop signs police around speed bumps in street railing "Caution! Pedestrians" sign |
3-ft wide sidewalk even with curb put in walking trail through trees grass needs to be even with sidewalk fence in front of sidewalk sidewalk wide enough for 3 people side by side overpass |
Student Statements:
I think we need all 10 of those ideas. We need those because it's a dangerous place and it needs to be a better place. Too many kids are getting hurt from skinned knees to car accidents. Our place needs to be safer and we're the only ones doing something about it.

I think the most important thing we need is a sidewalk on both sides of the
road. I think that because then the place next to the road would be flat and
would cover loose rock, ledges, ditches, and lots of other things. It would also
make a place to walk so we don't walk on the road with fast cars. A sidewalk
would also be good for cars so they don't have to go around people and so
they hit something else.

I think we should build a sidewalk. It would be safer and then we would have a safer place.
By Johnny
When I was at the intersection I saw a number of things that are wrong. There is only a yellow line for a sidewalk edge. There is room but nothing that people are safe on. The ground around the tracks is bad too. There are rocks and garbage everywhere. People slip on rocks all the time. If we had a concrete sidewalk people wouldn't slip on rocks and people would have more room.

I think that the intersection next to the high school should be made safer for kids and grownups. Here are some things that are bad: No sidewalks, stop signs, rocks out of the ground so people can trip and speed signs. Those are some things that need to be done by there. They need to build sidewalks and have a speed sign of about 15 mph and stop signs where there are crosswalks.

I especially think we should have a nice paved, safe
sidewalk on both sides so we don't have to walk, jog, bike
ride, rollerblade, skateboard, or any other activity that is
hard to do in a ditch. I say ditch because you can't go in the
street with the speeding cars. You also aren't safe on the
road because of all the rocks and bumps.

Dangerous Road
How can anybody be so cruel . . . Loose rocks, How can anybody be so cruel . . . Maybe they had a talk How could anybody be so cruel . . . By Erin |
We, the undersigned, believe that the intersection of Highway 30 and High School Way in Scappoose, Oregon, is unsafe for pedestrians. Many students walk through this intersection to school and to sports activities at the Scappoose School District Administration Field, and car traffic is increasing. We petition the City of Scappoose to improve the safety of this intersection by building a raised sidewalk on the north side of High School Way from Highway 30 to the Administration Building Entrance.
Signed, Three hundred seventy-six 4th, 5th and 6th graders from Otto Petersen School, June 2, 1997.
