Brainstorming

What's Bad:

rocks
bumps
ground uneven
lumpy ground
path too narrow
rocks and junk need to be cleared away
curb can be tripped over
path runs into railroad crossarm
grass not even
too many cars
no place to take a bike

What we need:
sidewalk on both sides
speed signs
stop signs
police around
speed bumps in street
railing
"Caution! Pedestrians" sign
3-ft wide sidewalk even with curb
put in walking trail through trees
grass needs to be even with sidewalk
fence in front of sidewalk
sidewalk wide enough for 3 people side by side
overpass

Student Statements:

  1. A wide sidewalk as far as it can be.
  2. The ditch to be filled in.
  3. Lower the speed limit.
  4. Put a fence around the danger area.
  5. Put dirt instead of rocks by the railroad tracks.
  6. Lower the curb because it's too high and it's hard to walk over.
  7. Paint a darker crosswalk so people can see it.
  8. Fill in the holes in the ground.
  9. Have street lights.
  10. Put speed bumps.

I think we need all 10 of those ideas. We need those because it's a dangerous place and it needs to be a better place. Too many kids are getting hurt from skinned knees to car accidents. Our place needs to be safer and we're the only ones doing something about it.

I think the most important thing we need is a sidewalk on both sides of the road. I think that because then the place next to the road would be flat and would cover loose rock, ledges, ditches, and lots of other things. It would also make a place to walk so we don't walk on the road with fast cars. A sidewalk would also be good for cars so they don't have to go around people and so they hit something else.

I think we should build a sidewalk. It would be safer and then we would have a safer place.

By Johnny

When I was at the intersection I saw a number of things that are wrong. There is only a yellow line for a sidewalk edge. There is room but nothing that people are safe on. The ground around the tracks is bad too. There are rocks and garbage everywhere. People slip on rocks all the time. If we had a concrete sidewalk people wouldn't slip on rocks and people would have more room.

By John

I think that the intersection next to the high school should be made safer for kids and grownups. Here are some things that are bad: No sidewalks, stop signs, rocks out of the ground so people can trip and speed signs. Those are some things that need to be done by there. They need to build sidewalks and have a speed sign of about 15 mph and stop signs where there are crosswalks.

By Christina

  1. I think there should be a three-foot sidewalk from the tracks to the administration office road.
  2. They need a curb next to the sidewalk.
  3. You know where the office is in the High School, when you go out the double doors there are two stop signs next to the crosswalk. They should put them up towards the administration crosswalk.
  4. Speed bumps on that road.
  5. And if they can't put a sidewalk in next to the road, put it next to the fence.
  6. An uneven road.
  7. Lower speed limit.
  8. Or they could take out part of the fence and put walking trails through the trees, and next to the administration building.

By Joey
I especially think we should have a nice paved, safe sidewalk on both sides so we don't have to walk, jog, bike ride, rollerblade, skateboard, or any other activity that is hard to do in a ditch. I say ditch because you can't go in the street with the speeding cars. You also aren't safe on the road because of all the rocks and bumps.

Student Poetry:

We Need a Sidewalk

We need a sidewalk
That's nice and neat.
We need a sidewalk
That's not full of holes.
We need a sidewalk
To be safe.
And I want to be safe.
Don't you?
We need a sidewalk.
Can you hear me?
We need a sidewalk!

By Christy

The Sidewalk

The sidewalk is lumpy
The sidewalk is bumpy

There's no room for two
There's no room for me nor you.

People get hit
Cars can't fit.

There's litter everywhere
There's really no care.

By Dawn

I Want to Walk

I want to walk
On a sidewalk
Not a rock.
I want to run
And have fun
On a sidewalk.
I want to walk
On a sidewalk,
And not hurt
My head on a rock.

The Unsafe Sidewalk

There should always be somewhere safe

As you walk along the side,
Something comes to mind;
Like "Is it always so rough and rugged?"
Always dodging, dodging, dodging!

Wish there was a way,
To make it a better walking day;
To make it a child's walkway,
Like the one on the driveway!

There should always be somewhere safe;
Somewhere safe to walk.
There should always be somewhere safe!

YOU SURE COULD USE A SIDEWALK

Gravel + Rocks!
Holes + Cracks!
YOU SURE COULD USE A SIDEWALK
Loose Chunks!
Big Bumps!
YOU SURE COULD USE A SIDEWALK
Scary Falls!
Terrified Calls!
YOU SURE COULD USE A SIDEWALK

by Marya

Sidewalk

Rocks here
Rocks there
We don't want rocks anywhere.

No place to walk
No place to run
Why can't we have a nice sidewalk?

By Ryan

Danger!!!!!

The rocky roads where children fall
The dusty clouds that rise so tall
What a DANGER!!!

The cracked cement
No place to walk
What a DANGER!!!

No stop signs or lights,
For those dark nights
What a DANGER!!!

Speeding cars, no place to go
Just a ditch
What a DANGER!!!
What a DANGER!!!

The Busy Street

Cars going fast,
Kids going past,
The busy street.

Rocks rolling down,
Sticks in the way,
The busy street.

Bumps in the way,
Tripping on the way,
The busy street.

Safety

People going to school
Little kids playing
We need to fix it for Safety.

Railroad tracks in the way
Kids going across to stay.
We need to fix it for Safety.

Stoplight in the air
Old people walking far.
We need to fix it for Safety.

By Jason

Rocks

Rocks, rocks, so many rocks
On the sidewalk, so many rocks.
Why rocks?
Why not talk?
So many rocks,
Lots of slots.

But why
So many rocks?

By Tim

The Sidewalk

Gravel, cement, and workers.
These are all the things we need
To make a sidewalk.

For all the dangerous things out there
Help!
We need a sidewalk.

Gravel, trucks, spaces,
These are all the things we need
To make a sidewalk.

Dangerous Road

How can anybody be so cruel . . .
To leave a dangerous road
By a school?

Loose rocks,
Uneven ground
Somebody might be going down
and

How can anybody be so cruel . . .
To let a dangerous road
Be by a school?

Maybe they had a talk
About a sidewalk
To fix the loose rocks
And uneven ground
So nobody will be going down,
but

How could anybody be so cruel . . .
To leave it that way
By a school.

The Petition

We, the undersigned, believe that the intersection of Highway 30 and High School Way in Scappoose, Oregon, is unsafe for pedestrians. Many students walk through this intersection to school and to sports activities at the Scappoose School District Administration Field, and car traffic is increasing. We petition the City of Scappoose to improve the safety of this intersection by building a raised sidewalk on the north side of High School Way from Highway 30 to the Administration Building Entrance.

Signed, Three hundred seventy-six 4th, 5th and 6th graders from Otto Petersen School, June 2, 1997.
