Problem: Determine the area of the shaded region:

Brittany's response:
What I need to do to solve this problem: I need to times L x W on both the shaded squares with the white spot added on. Then I need to subtract 12 from both the answers that I get from the shaded area because the white square was added on and 12 is how much the white part equaled. My answer is 48 for the little square, 108 for the big square and 144 for the main answer.

My work: Brittany filled in the missing dimensions for the white square on the drawing above.

6 x 8 = 48, - 12 = 36. [Brittany drew the squares separately.]
10 x 12 = 120, -12 = 108. [work shown.]

36 + 108 = 144

Answer: 144. [answer not labeled]

Checking my work: Brittany repeated the calculations and simple drawings for her check.
