Poetry: A Memorable Moment in Nature
taken from a test question that asked, "Describe a time when you really noticed something in nature--something worth remembering. . . ."
One time when I really noticed nature was when I went camping at Coos Bay. There were squirrels and birds hopping around in the trees. Over by the beach, there were tons of fish and trees.

When I went camping with my family and we were going on a hike, it was about 4:00 p.m. and I saw a wood-pecker. He was colorful and he looked like he didn't care about anything. He was too far away but I could see him. The reason I was so struck was that I had never seen a wood-pecker before. Plus it was so cool how he just sat there and didn't care if we were watching him.

When I saw a herd of deer walking through our pasture. I could barely be quiet enough to not make them run off. I think the reason I remember this is because I love to hunt them and also see them in nature.

The time I saw nature in some way was the sunrise. I saw it all pink in the sky and Mt. Hood was there -- the only thing besides the pink clouds. The clouds were so bright in the dark morning so it looked like the sun but pink and was spread out more. It was real awesome. I'll probably never forget it.

When we moved here from Idaho. In Idaho everything was dry, hot, and brown. When we moved here 1 year ago we noticed that it was wet, cold, and everything is green. Our whole family will remember living in Oregon because my mom burns a lot of wood and every Saturday we go out and get her wood in the rain.

This one time at a fishing hole I saw a deer in some gravel, and I thought I could sneak up on it, and I did. I got an arm's length away and it got spooked, so I froze. After a couple of minutes the deer walked away. Usually the slightest sound would set a deer running, but for some reason the deer didn't run, and that was special.

Every Sunday my Dad and I go riding. But there is this
one place called, "God's Bluff, well that's what we
call it. It overlooks the whole park and Mt. Hood,
Adams, and Jefferson. All you can imagine is green
trees. The first time I saw it, it struck me cause
thats all you can see for miles. The senses you use
there are sight, smell, and hearing. I think this is
something to remember because in 30 years I can tell
my kid about this. But in 30 years all those beautiful
green trees I was telling you about might not be
there. So that's why this is something to remember.

When I went to the Columbia Gorge and went under the waterfall and saw all the plants. That's the one because all of the plants were so beautiful, I remember 'cause it was my first time going there.

The time I really remember was when I went to the redwood forest and saw a hollow tree. You could drive a car in and park and it would all fit. The reason I remember this is because it was fun to see and it was a good sight.

When I was riding the bus home from school and I saw about 3 or 4 trees covered in woodpecker holes. I had no idea that woodpeckers pecked that many holes that deep just for food.
I think I really noticed the holes and thought they were neat because we can just get our food right out of the fridge or the pantry or cupboard. But woodpeckers and other animals have to find their food and work for it.

Going to the zoo when a monkey shook my cousin's hand. He thought he was born a monkey and my aunt adopted him as a chimp. We all called him monkey boy and he thought he was. I thought that the monkey was just strange.

My family in Mexico live 50 feet away from a big creek and an alligator lives there and when I was there, there was no gate so the alligator would always come out and rest on land with its mouth open, and so this one time my cousin and I went to go see it and it was a big alligator 5 feet long and I was standing 2 feet away from it and the feeling was see, having a scared thing in my stomach. Anyway, it was really still. It didn't move except breathing and its tail, the tail almost hit me it was huge. It was fun because I'd never seen an alligator wild and I'm never going to forget this moment.

When we went to Alaska in a car with my Aunt Ushi, Uncle David, cousins, and my Grandma and Grandpa in 1998, we camped out at night. Well, this one time we saw mountain goats, the whole herd with babies and everything. We got out and started to feed them. Then we got back in the car.
I guess what made it so memorable was that about two hours later my mom started yelling that she saw some more. So then when we got to where she said they were it was just a tree. It was so funny because she thought she had finally seen something that we hadn't.

In October I went to a Girl Scout camp. We went on a hike with my leader and got lost. That made me appreciate nature because without ferns we would have fallen. I noticed nature by touch.

At my grandmother's house I woke up and looked out the window and two baby deer were prancing around and it was funny. My sight was involved in this scene to remember.

One time I was out that I will never forget is when I was out with a friend hunting birds with BB guns. I saw a 5 or 6 point buck. I told my friend and we started to close in on him, then he ran away never to be seen again. I think I had two senses being used at that time, hearing and definitely sight. I think I was most struck by this because I had never seen a big buck stare straight in my eye. Even if we would have had a big gun, I still wouldn't have shot him. I don't know about by friend, though.

My family went camping. I went exploring and saw some ants eating a dead bird. It was shocking.

When I was up hiking there was this waterfall. The waterfall looked and I could feel the splashing water. I was struck by the waterfall because I looked at our path and saw a tunnel that went under the waterfall and we had to go under it. I will never forget this because that was my best summer.

I remember a time when just a couple weeks ago I saw a deer in our yard eating apples from our tree. It was so cool, but a few minutes later a car drove by and the deer ran away. That is a time I remember in nature.

I remember one time we were in the Redwood Forest and we stopped to look and out in this beautiful green meadow there was a herd of elk. It was beautiful.

When I was out camping I saw a mother bird fly in to her babies and feed them a worm. It was like a mother coming back from the store and feeding her babies. I was mostly using my sight when I saw them.

I remember seeing a tropical type of bird. I saw the bird at a friend's house. I used my eyes to see the bird, my hand to feel the bird, and my ears to hear the bird. I was interested in the bird because of his bright colors.
