Matthew A. Henson
1866-1955, Co-discoverer of North Pole with Peary, April 6, 1909

In 1908, Matthew Henson joined Commander Robert E. Peary's expedition to the North Pole. Because he was black, little attention was given to Henson after the mission, and yet it is obvious to historians that he played a major role in the its success. Henson's life is an example of courage and determination and should be honored.

The Petersen Quilt project is a school fundraiser to benefit the children of victims of September 11, 2001. Funds raised by the raffling of this quilt will be donated to the Families of Freedom Fund, which was created by former President Bill Clinton and former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole to provide college scholarships to spouses and children of the September 11 attack victims.
