Huffman wins both basketball tournaments
Girls defeat Mrs. Olson's class
by Samantha

On Thursday, March 7th, Petersen School had the championship basketball game. The two classrooms competing for the girls were Huffman and Olson. In the gym, the entire 6th grade would watch the game. In the first quarter, Olson was ahead: 9 to 0. My sister, Christie, was in Olson, and I was in Huffman. The rules were that we had to play 5 on 5, but Huffman had 5 players, so they were in all quarters.

Nearing the last few minutes of the game, it was 11 to 16, with 00:58 seconds on the clock. 5...4...3 the crowd stared chanting. Then buzzzzzzz! Huffman had won! "I didn't think we would win," Sarah, a team member, remarked. "I can't believe it!" I said.

Boys come back to win

The next game was for the boys. The two classrooms competing for the boys were Huffman and Frisch. In the first quarter, Frisch was way ahead: 11 to 0. In the second quarter, Frisch kept scoring. Score: 15 to 0. It seemed impossible. How could Huffman win now? But, in the third quarter, Huffman cam back! The score was now 15 to 14!

Last quarter. Pressure is on. Frisch scored 16 to 14. Then Huffman scored again and again! It was now 16 to 20, with 00:15 seconds left on the clock. Then Marcus grabbed the ball, and threw it across the court from the opposite free-throw line! It went in! Final score: 19 to 20! Huffman had won! Congrats to Mrs. Huffman's class, and great job Frisch and Olson!

Fifth Grade Music Program a Success
by Nicc

The fifth grade program was a very good one. When the fifth graders did it you could tell that they had practiced a lot. When they sang they sang out nice and loud. The people that had to do the solo parts didn't look like they were that nervous. I also think Mr. Mussmecher did a very good job getting them ready. Also the people that did the solo parts had good voices. The person that did the Australian man did a very good impression. One of the things that I noticed was that none of the equipment malfunctioned.

Spring Break Approaching
by Sam

Spring vacation is coming up soon. Everybody sure is excited. I know I am! The last day of school for a little while is March 22nd. After that is a week of hopefully enjoying nice "springy" weather. School starts again April 1st. Hello sunny warm Spring, and enjoy your magnificent break!

Boys Play Spectacular Game
Game a heart pounder
by Jessie

Did you hear about the tournament between Huffman and Frisch? Boy was it a heart pounder. In the first quarter Frisch was up 13 to nothing and right at the buzzer Marcus shot from half court. Huffman's team thought they were going to lose. Then Cameron made their first point and then they gained confidence and started making points. The game was so intense the crowd was on the edge of the bleachers. But finally after lots of hard work and plenty of 3 pointers by Jessie, Conrad, Ryan, and Chance, Huffman finally pulled the win of 20 to 19. Boy was it a thrill and I should know. I played in it.

A-6 Studying Greek Myths
by Marcus

In Mrs. Huffman's class we've been busy with Greek myths. Like gods and goddesses that live on Mt. Olympus. Hades is the god of the underworld. There are many gods. More than I can name. So that means that Mt. Olympus is incredibly huge. Or the gods are really tiny.

Students present Social Studies reports
Class learns about Africa and Ancient Egypt
by Katie

In our class we did reports on Africa and Egypt. Some people did Egypt reports earlier in the year and the Africa reports were just due on the 4th of this month. Then three days after the reports were due we did a speech on what we did our report on. It was fun cause we learned a lot. That is one of the things we have been doing.

Class celebrates basketball wins
by Marty

We had basketball tournaments. There was a boys and a girls team. Our class made the championship and we won. It was noisy. Every team had a lot of fun playing. On the boys team we had five people. On the girls team there were seven girls on the team. The other team boys made a good shot from the half court line. Everybody thought the other team would win but we pulled in the lead on the second half. Our teacher took pictures of the game. We had a small party in the class.

Mr. Vogel teaches art
Painting project a success
by Karissa

Hey everybody! I am going to tell you about what has been going on in A-6 at Petersen Elementary. We have been busy but I am going to tell you about art with Mr. Vogel.

When Mr. Vogel came in we had tons of fun. We got to paint pictures of fish. Everybodys turned out great. We mixed, mixed, and mixed with colors. Mr. Vogel is so much fun. He picks out the funnest projects. My picture has an orange fish and a background with mountains.

Now I have told you about what's going on in our class.

Fifth Grade Music Program Entertains
Humor thrills audience
by Cameron

We saw the fifth grade program. A kid named Tina had a cowboy part and it was hilarious. And then another kid dressed up as the crocodile hunter and talked like him too. At the end there was a good-bye song. I really liked it. It was called "Lighten Up," and there was a big poster above the stage that said, "Lighten Up."

Mrs. Huffman's class won the intramural championship for basketball. In the first quarter the other team was up ten to nothing, and at the buzzer Marcus made a half-court shot to put them up thirteen to nothing. Then Mrs. Hufrfman's class was on fire. Conrad got the ball and made a three pointer. When Jessie got the ball he made a three pointer. Then when Chance got a fast break he had four guys on his tail and made a shot with one hand, falling behind the backboard, and he made it. The score was 20 to 19 and Huffman won the game! the players: Conrad, Cameron, Ryan, Chance, and Jessie. Conrad was the MVP of the game.

A-6 Experiences Exciting Day
Girls and boys basketball teams win championships
by Debbie

On March 7, 2002, our class boys and girls were really excited to go to the championship for basketball. So we went to our humongous gym. We were so excited. We played against one of the best teams, Mrs. Olson's girls. Our girls won with the greatest score I ever saw. Out of the 16 to 10 we won. We were really lucky because we have never won anything so cool before.

Our boys also played that day aginst a pretty hard team, Miss Frisch's class. First Frisch's class started winning. Then we got back and won with a magnificent score 20 to 19. We celebrated that day. It was a wonderful day.
