Field Science Experience
by Zino, a.k.a. JessieMay 30- June 1, we went to camp Howard for Field Science Experience. I am going to tell you a little bit about what we did and who was there. I am going to explain to you about bedtime, field day, and my cabin counselors.
First I am going to tell you about bed time. When we were in bed talk, laugh, and giggle. We would talk about the day that had now came to an end and tell jokes about each other's funny life. Our cabin counselors would let us sneak over to other people's bunks and play cards, talk and do other stuff as long as we were quiet and followed the rules of the cabin. When everybody was asleep but me I heard snoring like you wouldn't believe, I swear it sounded like a heard of pigs playing in a pool of mud.
Second I am going to tell you about field day. Field day was kind of like a rec. center, you get to play games, see your friends do crazy things, and make a fool out of yourself too. We had a tug-a-love first and we versed another cabin and we lost. We also played Tick says, Tick says is just like Simon says, but the man who directed it's name was Tick. We had lots of fun playing; I got out really fast because I'm not that good. We also played pictionary, that was fun because we got to have a snack which was an orange slice and some lemonade.
Now I am going to tell you about our cabin councilors. Our cabin councilors were cool because they let us have freedom, and do whatever we wanted, as long as we were following the rules of F.S.E. Jorel was one of our councilors, he was really good at card tricks. He knew a ton of tricks and he knew what & how to do them. Meddel was another councilor. He likes to help people when they need it, like if you get your feelings hurt by somebody, if you didn't feel good, and other stuff like that.
The three things I just explained which were bedtime, field day, and my cabin councilors, come together to tell you that I had a blast at Field Science Experience and why it was so fun!
Outdoor School Essay
by Weasel, a.k.a. SamanthaI this essay on Outdoor School I will be speaking about my three favorite study areas at Camp Howard. My three favorite study areas at Camp Howard were; wildlife, plants, and soil.
At Outdoor School wildlife was by far my favorite study area. In wildlife the counselor in charge of our group gave our group a challenge to find over 98 things such as proof of prey, proof of predator, and animals. We succeeded and found 106 items. During our hike we took a couple of breaks and played a game. In the game one person would cover their eyes and everyone else hid (within a 50 yard radius). The people who were hiding were the predators and the person covering their eyes was the prey. The person who was the prey had to stay where they were and try to find people. On our hike we found millipedes, birds, and mostly small holes. The people in my group were Jonathan, Leroy, Lindsay, and Katie. Our group leader was Meddle.
My second favorite field study area at Outdoor School was plants. Before we went on a hike we were given a sticker, on the sticker was the picture of a plant which we were to find on the hike. The name of my plant was the "Skunk Cabbage." The people in my group were Kyle F., Rachael, and Mikey, our group leaders were Daisy and Chickory. At the end of our hike we played a game to review what we learned. One person would go up in front and Daisy would hold up a card with a word on it (over their head). The people in the audience would give one word clues to the person and the person would try to guess what the card said.
My third favorite field study area at Outdoor School was Soil. At Soil there were different stations such as Soil Soup in which you figured out what was in soil. There was another station where you made loam and there were also a few others. Before we started going to the different stations we played a game (because the boys ere late!). The game was called Telephone. The girls were split into two groups (one group on one log the other group on another log). One of the counselors whispered something in the ear of the person at the end of the line. You were supposed to get the saying/word to the other end as fast as you could by passing it on through whispers. The people in my group were Roland, Kellyn, and a few other people (who I can't remember), our group leader was Ruxpin.
My favorite field studies were wildlife, plants and soil. My first being wildlife, second being plants, and third being soil.
Camp Howard
by Rainbow, a.k.a. SharlaIn this essay I only chose three out of four field study's because those three I liked the most, and learned the most in. I'm going to tell you about wild life, water, and plants. And what we did, and a few of the games we played.
In this paragraph I will talk about wild life. Some of the games we played were the bat and the moth, and the deer and the fox. Both games I thought were really fun and had a lot of facts in them. We did not see any animals, but we saw an animal skull, deer trails, and deer prints I leaned how a deer hears, how a fox walks, a bat finds food, and the best place for an animal to live.
Now I will tell you about water. We caught a salamander, and a snail. I learned how to tell if a stream is healthy or not, if something is acidic or not, and how to test the P.H. The people in my group were Kaylin, Christina, Jonathon, Camille, Josh, and myself.
Finally I will tell you about plants. The name of my plant was the trailing blackberry. Some of the plant names I learned were all five furn's, the lady furn, the bracken furn, the sword furn, the licorice furn, and the deer furn. I also learned the names of the two most common trees, the hemlock tree, the douglas fur tree. And some of the flowers names, fairy lantern, butter cup, salmon berry, and the wild rose. We played a game were one person stands in front of the class with a name of a plant above their head, and we had to give them hints.
Which was your favorite? In the three days I was at camp I learned a lot from all four field study areas, but I only wrote about three of them wild life, water, and plants. Although I learned a lot about soil to.
My Weekend
by JoeyOver the weekend I went to the movies, Sun Shine pizza, and then to the arcade.
When I went to the movies I saw Shrek. It's about a ogre that goes to a kingdom to get his property back. The king made a deal with him. The deal was if he wold go and save the princes he wold give his property back, and well, I don't wont to tell you what happens. Its a funny movie.
When I went to Sunshine Pizza I had Canadian bacon and root beer. Then I saw the video games and I said can we go to the arcade? She said, Ok and we did.
We went to the arcade in Longview. I think it's called Wonder Land Video games. After a while it got boring so we went home.
Last weekend was fun for me when I went to the movies, arcade and Sunshine Pizza. After we went home it got boring again.
CAMP
by Bubbles, a.k.a. AshleyOn Wednesday, May 30, the 6th grade went to Outdoor School. I'm going to tell you about we did. I'll tell you day by day what we did, the activities, games and even field study. I'll be pretty much telling you about everything we did thing by thing.
Wednesday, the first day of camp. We got to Camp at around 11:00, we went on a tour of the whole camp. Then after our tour we went to the dinning hall for lunch. For lunch we had Macaroni & Cheese (it was more like cheese and macaroni, but it was still good!). There where side dishes like salad. After lunch we were assigned to our cabins. In the cabin I was in there was Rachael, Anna, Amanda, Hannah and Mallory Our cabin counselors were Pseudopod and Sea Breeze. We were in the Mallard cabin. Our cabin was the smallest!!!! Then after that we went to our field study. Our class was on Soil. They split you up into little groups, and sent the little groups with leaders. We learned about the soil layers, and the different types of soil. After field study we got our beads and went back to our cabins. Then we went to dinner. After dinner we had a hour with our teacher to read or do what ever. Then after the hour we went back to our cabins and got ready for campfire. At campfire we learned many songs. then after campfire we went to our cabins and went to bed. That's our very busy first day of camp!
On our second day of camp, which was Thursday (wow our first and only full day of camp), in the morning we got up at 6:45, got ready for the day and went to the mess hall for breakfast. For breakfast we had French toast, plus the side dishes. After breakfast every one went back to the cabins to get ready for field study, then went to the field study meeting spot. Our class was on plants. As you may already have guessed we learned about plants. Just like the other studies they split you up into different groups. After field study we got our beads, and went to our cabin meeting spot. Today for lunch we had a barbeque. Hamburgers, cookies, and apples. YUM!!! Then we went back to the cabin to get ready for afternoon field study. Our class was on Water. In this study we got to pick bugs out of the water. We were looking for Golden Stone flies, and regular Stone flies. After the study we got our beads and went to our cabin meeting spot. After our whole cabin was there we had field day!! There were lots of games to play like, tug-of-war! After field day it was time for dinner. Our cabin was table toppers, so we set the tables. After dinner we had our regular schedule (less confusing for most), teacher time, camp fire, then bed. Wow, that's a lot!!!
Well today's Friday. Today's a little different. Today we get to eat in our cabin! First to start the day off, we get to pack our bags! Then we get to take our bags to the bus loading area, then go to field study! Today it's Wildlife! We went on a hike and learned about wildlife. Then after field study we got our beads, and went to get our name tags signed by all the counselors. Then went to wash for lunch. For lunch we got chicken nuggets and french fries. After lunch we lowered the flag, and then had a tree planting ceremony. Then we boarded the bus and left.
Not very many people wanted to leave, we all had so much fun!!! Well, that's our trip to camp. For the other people who didn't go to the same camp, was your trip pretty much the same or was it different? Well I told you about our days at camp. I hope you had as much as we did!
CAMP
by Bear, a.k.a. KellynAt camp we had learning stations student leaders and staff and a lot more than that but I am going to tell you my three favorites out of each thing I talked about up there. My three favorite learning stations where soil, wildlife, and plants on plants and wildlife you got to go on a hike and soil was just fun.
My three favorite students leaders where Viper, Hoody, and Hammer Head. Viper and H.H. where in my cabin and they where cool. Hoody was just funny.
My favorite staff where Tick Enzime and Teal all because they where cool and nice.
Now I have told you three of every thing I liked from camp.
Camp
by Rock, a.k.a. LeroyHi my name is Leroy. My three best things about the camp were the camp counselors and staff. The best were HOODY, Gutter and Baker.
My first favorite counselor is HOODY because we did a lot with each other. I was with him in the cabin. Plus I was with him in the hike for plants. And his favorite thing to do is play the guitar.
My second favorite consular is Gutter. Gutter is very cool. I like him because he was smart and funny. And when there was a problem he stayed and let HOODY go back to the cabin with the kids. And his favorite thing to do is play the guitar.
My third favorite person is Baker. He's not a camp counselor but he is part of the staff. I like him because he always made fun games. My favorite game he made was Bobdebobbobbob. And he was very funny.
You have just heard my three favorite camp counselors and staff. I hope you get to go to outdoor school and Camp Howard. My three favorite are HOODY, Gutter and Baker.
Campfire
by Filly, a.k.a. Kyle F.Campfire was the time before we went to bed in which we did cabin call, sang some rowdy songs, and also sang some quiet songs.
The first thing we did at campfire was cabin call. Cabin call is something that all of the cabins had to do which was usually a short song or skit that the cabin made up.
After cabin call everybody joined together to sing some rowdy songs. We probably learned about 10 different rowdy songs during the 2 campfires that took place. Some of the songs had lyrics about sharks, coconuts, and peanut butter and jelly. There were lots of other fun songs about different things but those three were my favorites.
When all of the rowdy songs came to an end we began singing some quiet songs. Between the two campfires we learned about seven songs. The songs were mostly about things like animals, the moon, and water. We sang these songs as we were dismissed from campfire to go to our cabins and go asleep.
The cabin call, the rowdy songs, and the quiet songs were the things that made campfire my favorite part of the day. I hope that you thought that this sounded fun, but if you really want to know how fun it was, go to a school camp and make your own observations.
Camp Counselors
by Scoobydoo, a.k.a. JonathanI am going to tell you, first about Hoody one of my cabin counselors, second about Gutter my second cabin counselor. And, third about my cabin and what the cabin inspection score was. First, my cabin counselor Hoody taught me a Metalica song called blackbird. Hoody's real name is Cody Stadler. He thought our cabin calls both nights at the campfire.
Second my second cabin counselor Gutter. Gutter also taught me a Limp Bizkit song called faith. Gutters real name is Tony Burton. Tony and Cody both live in Portland, a few blocks away from each other.
And finally third the cabin. The cabin was in the shade, so it was cold when we got back from field study. We got a 60 on our cabin inspection, which is a perfect score, and our cabin was the only one that got a perfect score.
Now I have told you about Cody, Tony, and my cabin and our cabin inspection. You had better like my story about Camp Howard.
Staying Home
by Chablis, a.k.a. ChelseaI had a lot of fun not going to camp. I'll tell you some reasons shy in the next 4 paragraphs. I think I'm glad I didn't go to camp, but I don't know what it was like, so I'm not really sure which I would prefer.
The first reason I liked it was because of what I did. I was in the reading lab, so I had a lot of spare time to do what I liked. I got to read, play the computer, play cards, and I even had time to catch a few z's.
The second reason I liked being there was because of the company. Tomas, Ray, and Latara were always pretty pleasant to hang around with. They were always joking around and it was fun.
The third reason that I liked it was because of what I did on the second day. Mrs. S. took me out for coffee and a donut, and I got my favorite type vanilla nut roast with two International Delight French Vanilla Cream. Delicious.
Well, now you know why I liked staying in the reading lab, and some of what I did. Next time I hope it is as enjoyable as it was this year. So ends my somewhat anti-climatic story. Adios!
What I learned at Outdoor School!!!!!
By Black Unicorn, a.k.a. MadalaineI'm going to tell you a little about the stations at camp. First I'm going to tell about wildlife, water, plants.
What I learned at wildlife is that, predators hide while hunting to have a better chance at catching there prey. The best place to find animals all depends on there type. If they like sunbathing or swimming or sleeping in the shade. But there are some animals who like most of these places…. Like the deer. The deer will go out in the sun to eat, but when a predator comes it runs back into the forest to hide. A deer also sleeps in the forest.
What I learned at water is that, if the creek is a fresh water then it will have a whole bunch of beautiful green plants around it. The predators of a fresh water creek would basically be the golden Stonefly and a red worm looking thing that has major big jaws. The way you tell if it is a fresh water is it has animals like the mayfly, the Stonefly, and small snails and fish. If it is not a fresh water creek it will have stuff like baby mosquito's, water worms, and leeches.
What I learned at plants is that, even though the nurse log and the snag look similar, the snag is a home to creatures not plants. The nurse log is a dead tree that has new plants on it, like baby trees, moss, and other plants. The thing that gives plants there names all depends on what they look like. Say like there is a plant that looks like a ducks foot, the name to that plant of course is called ducks foot. There is also a fern that looks really pretty. Since ladies are the fairest people, they of course named it the lady fern. The lady fern has a real silky feel.
Well that's what I have to tell you on what I learned at camp. I hope you liked learning a little more of what I said about Wildlife, water, and plants. Thank you for listening. THE END
Camp
by Kitty, a.k.a. BethWhen we went to camp on the 30th and came back on the 1st we did some things I would like to share. My most favorite things where field day, water, and campfire. These are the things you will read in this paper.
My most favorite thing was field day. We played six games not counting the first game we played. The first game we played tug of war.
We pulled and pulled and finally we won the tug of war game. Then we were to go on and play against a cabin of boys. The first game we played there was a fast game to where you had to race against the other team.
One team would have a noddle and have to pass it over and under them selves. When they are doing this the other team is as a person run around the rest of the group till the other team gets done passing the noddle. The second game was where both teams get with their cabin and they reach in and grab two different hands then the team tries to untangle themselves without talking. The third game is simple pictionary to where two teams try to guess the word with pictures. Next was Tick Says. You would have to do what Tick says. If he says "Tick says" if you do this, when he does not say your out. The fifth game was you would have to spin five times with your head on a bat and then run back to tag the next person. The sixth game was a thinking game. Both teams would get on a tarp and try to flip it over without stepping off.
My second favorite was water study. Here we got to test the DO level and test the PH level. We got to draw in our books and answer questions. We got to look for bugs, crawdads, salamanders, and geckos. Here Annie and Serra fell into the water. We had a guide named Viper. It was nice and cool by the creek and we sat on a bridge while we listened to the lesson.
My third favorite thing was campfire. Here we got to do call outs. When they called your cabin you would stand up and do something. For an example we were in Racoon cabin so when the called us we would stand up and do something like a cheer or a song that had racoon in it. Then the staff would do a skit or a song. After that a class would do a skit. Then we would sing songs like "Coconuts", or "the Shark" song. We would do a few more skits and then came transition time. At transition time we would sing soft, slow songs. Then we would be released to go back to our cabin.
The last day of camp we all got on the bus. It started to rain and we said our good-byes and I will never forget the field day, water, and campfire.
Camp Howard
by Tweety, a.k.a. AnnieWhen we went to Camp Howard the people there all had camp names that were not real. We also had field day and played games. Every night we had campfire. Campfire was my favorite.
Everyone at Camp Howard had a different name. There were cabin counselors. They had different names too. Their names were Mailbox and Jingo. They lived with us and played games with us. On Friday they told us their real names.
On field day we played games like Tug-of-love and Tick says Tug-of-love is just like Tug-of-war and Tick says is just like Simon Says. The games were very fun and it was very, very hot outside on Thursday.
Every night we had campfire and we sang songs. It was really fun. We also had cabin calls. The counselors would say a cabin name and the cabin would sing or do a skit. Campfire was my favorite part because we had a perfect view of Mt. Hood. At night Mt. Hood was purple, pink, and orange.
I liked camp a lot and I didn't want to leave but I know that I will always remember the cabin counselors, field day, and my favorite, the campfires.
