Camp Howard
by Angel, a.k.a. Lindsay

Which is your favorite? When I went to outdoor school at Camp Howard we did a lot of fun stuff, but I had three favorites. Those three things included campfire, field day, and the four field study areas (soil, plants, water, and wildlife).

At campfire we sang songs such as Coconuts, Humpty Dumpty, The Shark Song, and Tarzan. We also did cabin calls. A cabin call is where all of the cabin members in each cabin come up with a short chant song or skit which will be performed at campfire that night. We also did our class skits at campfire. All four 6th grade classes that were there came prepared with a skit to do at campfire on either the 1st or the 2nd night. Campfire was an hour long and we had it both nights we were there.

My next favorite was field day. At field day we played a lot of games but I had a few favorites which were Tug Of “love”, and the tarp game. Tug Of “Love” is the same thing as Tug Of War, but they thought war was a mean word so they used love instead. When we played Tug Of “Love” boys cabins versed boys cabins and girls cabins versed girls cabins. Then the girl staff (including the teachers) versed the boy staff, and the Girls won! The tarp game was were two cabins would stand on one side of the tarp and try to flip it over and get everybody on the other side. In order to get to the other side of the tarp it takes effort, team work, and a really good strategy. I liked Tug Of “Love” better than the tarp game.

My next favorite was the study areas. There were four study areas which were soil, plants, water, and wildlife. At soil we got to test the soil to see what kinds of insects live in it. We also learned the five layers of soil at this study area. On plants we went on a plant hike and we saw a lot of different plants from Hem Locks to Ferry Lanterns. At water we got to test the waters temperature and pH level. We also got to learn about the different kinds of things that lived in the water by testing its pH level. On wildlife we got to go on a wildlife hike and see a lot of different animal tracks and signs of animals. I think wildlife was the most fun for me because I really like animals and it was the most interesting study area.

Maybe, someday if you go to outdoor school at Camp Howard you will like campfire, field day, and the four study areas as your three favorites to. If you ask me I think Camp Howard was a fun place. If I were you I would consider going there and seeing for yourself. I also think it would be fun to go back in three years and be a student leader.

May 30 our whole class left for outdoor school. We would be back June 1. Now I am going to talk to you a little bit about what we did in cabin free time, also about the four field study areas, and about what we did at the camp fire.

First I will talk to you about what we did in our cabin free time. When we first went to our cabins for free time we played some games, made up our beds, and sat and talked. The games we played were the name game, telephone, and a game where you act like something and there is one person that tries to figure out what everyone else is. Also in our cabin time we decorated our cookies. Cookies are the name tags we wore. At bed time one of our cabin leaders would read to us. The other one would do it the next night. I think cabin time was fun. It was the time you got to play games with your friends in your cabin.

Now I am going to tell about each science field study. The first one will be soil. Soil was the first field study we went to. In soil we went to different stations where they had us do different activities. Like one station we learned what was in soil, in another we learned how long it takes to make soil, and even with one of our activities we got to eat a jelly bean. The next day we had the plant station. We went on a hike up on Howard grounds and stopped to see all the plants and trees. We saw plants and trees that stunk and ones that smelt really good. There were a lot of plants that had weird names. The hike was so pretty. I've never really been on a hike where I actually stop and take a look at all the plants and trees. The next science field study we went on was the water. What we did there was we went to a spot where there was a little stream and observed the area. We looked for what kinds of plants lived there. Then after we did some experiments we got to take nets out into the water and try and catch some bugs. We did that for about thirty minutes. After that was up we had to draw a picture of one of the bugs we found. Then we headed back. The last science field study we went to was wildlife. In wildlife we went on another hike. It was different from the plant one though. We went on the hike and looked for animals, insects, and home of animals and insects. One of our challenges was to try and find new homes of animals our leaders had not seen before. We found some kind of bees nest. It looked really cool. On the hike we got to stop and play some games. They weren't the fun coolest games but, it was fun!

Last but not least I am going to tell you what we did at the camp fire. At camp fire we went and sat together with our cabins. We would do different cabin calls each night. A cabin call is where you make up something like a song or saying so ever one knows your cabin is there. Then the teachers would do there own. Also the staff there. After that was all over two classes a night would perform a skit they had worked on before we went to camp. Then we would sing songs and some staff members would do skits. Then we would go back to our cabins and ''go to sleep''.

That is what I had to say about what we did in our cabin free time, the four science field studies, and what we did at the camp fire. I hope you get a chance to have a wonderful experience at Camp Howard like I did!

CAMP HOWARD

On May 30, 31, and June 1, I was attending outdoor school. At camp we had a lot to do. Lets see there was meal time, cabin time and campfire. I think that you will like to know a little about these three fun topics. I had fun learning about these topics and I think that you will too.

We had three basic meals of the day breakfast, lunch and dinner, well there was snack time. Snack time was after field study but before dinner. For snack time they basically gave us oranges. Every morning we would be waken up by are cabin counselors singing purple duck, a song that we learned at camp. Each cabin had names. My cabin was called The Mallard Cabin. After we go up and got dressed and brushed are teeth we headed down to the dining hall were we ate all of are meals. The girls and the boys would line up on opposite sides of the large building, and people called hosts would go down tot the flag pole and ask a controllers if they would like to join them for the meal. After that we finally get to eat. The jump ups are people who get the food and water, a and are the only ones aloud to get up from the table. They then get up go to the kitchen and get the main meal. Then the hosts take the first bite and we eat. It's about the same for every meal. But at lunch and dinner awe get desert.

At cabin time we had to make a cabin call. A cabin call is a way to let the controllers know that were here at campfire. They were just fun little skits or songs about are cabin. Each cabin had ablest 2 counselors, my cabin had 2 councilors. There names are Sea Breeze and Psuedopod. The cabin councilors weren't aloud to tell us there real names until the last day. They were the people who stayed with us in the cabins. Before bed each cabin councilors would individually come to are bunk and say good night and tell us what we were going tomorrow.

At campfire we sang to the hole camp are cabin calls. Most of them where really funny, people would fall over laughing. The counselors from all the cabins would make up and teach us new songs. There were loud songs and quiet songs before we went to bed, and my favorite repeat after me songs. For the quiet songs instead of clapping we would rub are hands together and show the to the fire. Don't ask me why we did that cause I just don't know. Before all the songs the counselors and the class rooms perform skits that they made before they came to camp. They were really good.

I hope that some day you too will be able to visit Camp Howard and have as much of a good time as I did. You will get to enjoy meal times, cabin time and my absolute favorite campfire. Come visit Camp Howard soon. They are the best camp in my opinion.

When I went to Camp Howard we did so many things I can't even name them all! Some things were field day, the tree ceremony, the flag ceremony, we learned games, we learned songs, and so on and so forth. Right in this essay I'll tell you some of the more interesting things. Now don't get me wrong here, 'cause I loved all the things we did at camp. But these are the things I liked most about camp were things like- the study areas, the cabin counselors, and the campfire each night! And I will try to fill you in on all the details, because you won't want to miss out on this essay!

Now for the study areas. There were four, I'll tell about each one- one by one. First came soil. Soliel was in charge of soil. Soliel means "sun" in French, as she told us. Anyway for soil we went and learned all the things used to make soil (oxygen, inorganic materials, organic materials, and water). We learned about some different kinds of soil (silt, sand, and clay). One rule about the soil was that we could never call it "dirt," 'cause that's just not what it is. For a study guide I had Ruxpin, you'll learn more about her later.

So now that you know about soil, let me tell you about Copper, oops, I mean plants. And yes, copper was in charge of plants if you must know! What we did in plants was a hike. What we did on that hike was a small and short game called, "Plant Detective." It was a lot of fun because what happened was the study leader gave us a small badge that had an unidentified plant on it and we had to find that plant and identify it. I had Psuedopod for a group leader.

Next was water. In charge of water would be Aspen, who may I add was great! In water we learned how to test pH, water molecules, and we studied the stream to see if it was healthy by digging for insects and counting them. I had lime for a student leader, he was pretty cool.

After water came wildlife. In charge of that would be Zou, I'll tell you something cool that happened after our hike. So like I said we went on another hike and became really tired, and that was that. Joking!!! What really happened was we counted all of the animal trails (scat, footprint, and so on...) and even the animals themselves. There were way to many to count, but... we did! And we got somewhere over one hundred. For wildlife I had Meddle , he was really nice! So after our hike we went back to the place that we started and it turned out that Zou had a surprise... She brought a Bearded Dragon to let us see, pet and learn more about!

Now for the cabin counselors. Since there are way to many to count, I'll just name my cabin counselors- Jasper (Laura) and Periwinkle (Beth). The main things I liked about them was that they taught us a whole bunch of new games, and we taught them some!

For the campfire we learned some new songs and the skits were the best part, except when we did ours. The class did great, but I felt so nervous, you wouldn't believe it! Anyway I had so much fun at campfire with all the songs and skits they had! They had so much fun stuff I can't even put it into words, so I won't- you'll have to go and find out the fun they have over at Camp Howard!

So now that you understand more about the study areas, cabin counselors, and campfire go and join the fun with the people at Camp Howard- you'll want to!

Camp Counselors
by Buttercup, a.k.a. Kayla

Which is your favorite? When I went to camp Howard picked three camp counselors that were my favorite picked the funniest , coolest , prettiest. I also picked ones that have the coolest nicknames. Here are there names Black Bird , Firefly ,and Sea breeze.

Black Bird is the most funniest camp counselor there is in camp Howard. I also like him because he loves basket ball, and I love basket ball too. He might even come to Scappoose High School and play basket ball and go to school.

Firefly how to explain well I love the color of her hair reddish. She is very nice and she is fun to be around ,because when I was in group for water she let us catch bugs in the pound. I also like her nickname Firefly because I love fireflies.

Last but not least Sea breeze because I like her nickname because it reminds me of the ocean and I love the ocean. I like the way she dyed her hair it really looks good on her and it reminds me of a Robin and I like Robbins. I also liked a skirt she wore one day.

I hope you agree on which people you like but these are not all the camp counselor there are there are lots more but, you have to go to camp Howard to find out!

Outdoor School
by Snakey, a.k.a. Kyle A.

When we got there they made us feel comfortable because some people didn't feel good. So they were talking to us to make us feel good.

When got to outdoor school they talked about what we would be doing. First we met our cabin leader. We went there for forty-five minutes. Then we went for lunch.

After we ate we did field study. In three days we did soil, plant, water, and wildlife. We did all of this in the order they're in. In soil I learned breaking rocks is weathering and that silt is the smallest out of sand, soil, and clay.

Third we did something like recreation, but we played tug-a-war, a racing game, flip the tarp, a football game, and last we played rock-paper-scissors. In tug-a-war my cabin, the Ravens, beat the other team we played. At the racing game the boys beat the girls. Every body failed at the tarp game. At the football game it was a tie. I got the highest in rock-paper-scissors.

And that was my time at outdoor school. I had a lot of fun and hopefully if you go to the same camp you will have as much fun as me.

Camp Howard
by Supernova, a.k.a. Kaylin

I recently went to Camp Howard. In this short story I will

mention my favorite thing at camp, three of my favorite counselors, and all about field day so lookout for those three things.

My favorite thing at camp Howard was the campfires. I liked them because first we did the hyper fast songs such as, "Baby Shark", "Coconuts", or "Humpty Dumpty." Then when you were all tired out from singing all of those songs with exaggerating all of the movements, we sang soft songs such as, "Baby Moon", "Plant a rose for me", and "My three companions."

Three of my favorite counselors were, Fire Fly, because she was really sweet and she was always ready with a hug. Ruxpin because she wasn't afraid of being her self she was just herself. And last but not least I liked Black Bird because he told Kayla B. that she reminded him of Dede off of Dexter's Laboratory. So She called him Dexter and he called her Dede. And they acted like brother and sister. It was really funny.

Field day was a day were everyone went outside and played games it would have been fun but I didn't get to play because I was suffering from mild dehydration. It kind of ruined the experience. Yet it was funny to watch, like when Mikey fell on his face! He was laughing harder than I was! All in all it turned out to be a great day.

Well, when and if you go to Camp Howard I hope you are like me and have a favorite thing about camp, three favorite counselors and a fun, fancy free, and active field day.

With in the next three paragraphs I will talk to you about what I did at camp. I will tell you what the fun level was for me, I will tell you about my camp councilors and a few of the other ones I met there, and last but not least the song that I liked and why I liked them.

the fun level was pretty high. Thanks to field day, field study and camp itself. I liked field day because of all the activities and the fact that everyone had smiles on there faces throughout the day. I liked field study because you got to explore, test, and learn new things . I liked camp itself because of how they organized it to make it fun and kept it fun for everyone that was there.

I liked a lot of the camp councilors and there were a few that I didn't get to know. My camp councilors were Orion (Rhiannon) and Zodiac (Brandy). They were fun and let us decorate our necklaces with glow in the dark beads it was really fun. Our camp councilors taught us songs and played instruments for us they even read us books to help us get to sleep. I liked when we had cabin time because we got to play lots of games. Another councilor that I liked was Turtle even though she wasn't a cabin councilor she was really cool and I liked hanging out with her.

Now I will tell you about thee songs we learned at camp or the camp songs and my three favorites. A lot of the songs that we learned were fun and exciting. My three favorites were "If you love me", "A wee baby moon", and "The coconut song". I liked those songs because of the tune and the words. I enjoyed all of the songs those are just my three favorite ones.

I have finished telling you my fun exiting experiences at Camp Howard. The things that were said were the fun level for me, the4 camp councilors , and the songs at camp and why I like them. I hope you enjoyed this, and if you go to camp I hope you have the same experiences as I did and as much fun.

CAMP HOWARD
by Camille

At Camp Howard we did a lot of activities. But these are just a few I liked doing the best. They are study areas, cabin time, and campfire.

The first thing I'm going to talk about is study areas. The study areas are were soil, plants, water, and wildlife. The ones I liked the best were plants, water, and wildlife. There was a lot that I learned at those stations.

The second thing I'm going to talk about is cabin time. In our cabin we sang camp songs, made a cabin constitution, and organized the cabin out.

The third thing I'm going to talk about is campfire. Campfire was really cool because we got to do skits, sing songs, tell funny stories, and transition. Transition is where we calm down from all the excitement. But when the person was done we didn't clap we put out our hands and reflected the firelight. Some of the songs we learned were "Plant a rose for me", "Coconuts". One of the funny stories we learned was "The three bears".

That was what I liked the most at Camp Howard. They were study areas, cabin time, and campfire. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of new things.

CAMP HOWARD OUTDOOR SCHOOL
By: Millenium, a.k.a. Roland

In this essay about my time at camp Howard outdoor school I'll be talking about 3 main subjects. First I'll be talking about getting up early in the morning. Then I'll tell you about my favorite field study . And last but not least to wrap up my essay I'll tell you about getting ready for bed.

{YAWN}. Time to get up. Early in the morning our cabin leaders would wake us up by being loud. We would have about 10 or15 minutes to get dressed into our clothes for the day. After that we would brush our teeth &then we would head on down to the dinning hall to eat breakfast.

{YEAH} Now its time for field study. While at camp Howard there were four field studies. Of the four studies my favorite study would have to be soil. The reason I choose soil to be my favorite because That was the study that I had the most fun at.

{YAWN} Time for bed..at night time we walk back to the cabin from campfire .we would gather our things & go on back down to the bathroom & do our toiletries then head on back up to the cabin. When we would be on our way back to the cabin we would stop & chat w\friends. When we would return to the cabin we would have about ten minutes to get all nice & snug.

I had a great time at camp. I hope you enjoyed learning about my time at camp Howard.
